Avian influenza monitoring in wild birds

The State Veterinary Administration asks organisations and the public to contact the locally competent regional veterinary administration in case of finding dead wild birds of the targeted species (even individual birds). Reporting does not apply to dying, sick, injured wild birds or birds proven to have died as a result of electrocution or trauma. In the case of mass mortalities (more than five birds at one location), please contact the local KVS, even if the birds are not on the target species list. For more information on the issue, including a list of target wild bird species and contacts to the individual local SVS offices, see the following Link.

For safety reasons it is not advisable to handle dead birds. We recommend following the instructions of the official veterinarian. In case of suspected poisoning in wild birds (it happens for example in birds of prey), it is advisable to contact the local KVS in addition to the Police of the Czech Republic. In addition to a toxicological examination to confirm or refute poisoning, an avian influenza test may be carried out.
